Participation has its rewards

Chris Queram,
President and CEO
We’re pleased to present the inaugural issue of our newsletter, News & Views. The newsletter will provide you with the latest news about the Collaborative and happenings in the world of health care performance measurement and improvement. We will also share our perspectives and those of our members, partners and the community. Most of all, we want this newsletter to be relevant, helpful and easy to read. To that end, we welcome your comments and suggestions as we look toward future editions.

The Wisconsin Collaborative for Healthcare Quality’s members and partners share a common goal of improving patient care and the health of the community. As health care organizations become involved in our performance measurement and improvement efforts, many report to us that they get more out of their participation than they ever anticipated. This past year we interviewed several members to find out what the Collaborative offers them and their organizations – here are highlights of what we learned.

What are the benefits of participation with the Collaborative? The answers can be summarized into three areas: it gives organizations a credible process for performance measurement, energizes their improvement efforts and offers a valuable avenue for sharing and learning with others.

A credible process for performance measurement
Members value the fastidious and collaborative approach we take to develop measurement models that all of us can stand behind. We use a comprehensive process to develop our performance measure specifications. Members appreciate and respect the rigor of this approach because of the accuracy and actionability of the resulting measures.

Energized improvement efforts
A common theme among members is the enthusiasm that takes hold at organizations when they begin to see the results of their efforts. The performance measures help to set new improvement goals and motivate them to focus their energies throughout their organizations. No matter where an organization is with respect to quality improvement, members have found their participation in the Collaborative has added value to their initiatives, opening doors, fostering new conversations and providing opportunities for improvement.

A place to share and learn
Members embrace the non-competitive forum the Collaborative offers that promotes productive and honest sharing of information and experiences for the common good. For them, it’s a place to network and meet others that are interested in tackling cost and quality issues while seeking best practices. Members feel comfortable sharing their experience – warts and all – knowing others share the desire for improvement.

The passion and commitment of our members and strategic partners is indeed inspiring. We appreciate that organizations are willing to make the effort to be a part of a significant initiative that helps improve the quality and cost-effectiveness of healthcare for the people of Wisconsin.
