Prevent Medication Errors
The potential benefits for patients, payers and providers led national experts in health care quality and safety to recommend CPOE as one of the Leapfrog Group’s recommended practices. Recent research shows that if this practice were implemented in all urban hospitals in the U.S., as many as 907,600 serious medication errors could be prevented annually. CPOE also reduces length of stay and turnaround times for laboratory, pharmacy and radiology requests. This measure indicates whether a hospital has, or is in the process of developing, a CPOE system.
